Lessons from the Field: What sports can teach us about creating a more balanced, effective and successful team strategy!

We couldn’t imagine a sports team full of forwards or without any defense. Yet, in business, we often set our team goals in a way that expects everyone to score like forwards, rather than crafting targets that acknowledge and reward the varied, crucial contributions each team member makes to the overall company objectives. In this session, I’ll cover key lessons from the world of sports on structuring, motivating, and evaluating the success of our teams. We’ll explore why a diverse team dynamic outperforms one-dimensional strategies (spoiler alert: there’s a reason teams need different positions to succeed). Next, I’ll delve into how a narrow focus on traditional OKRs fostered silos and hindered progress at Onomondo, and what we did to address these challenges. Finally, I will introduce our innovative ‘OKR(ish)’ framework, which revolutionized our approach to goal-setting, fostering a more cohesive, balanced, and engaging environment. This framework not only aligned our entire business but also reflected the contributions of every team member, propelling us toward collective success.
